Three Crafty Cocktails to Get you Through the Holidays

The holiday season is a special time. It’s a time where friends and family get together to share stories, presents, food, and of course, festive drinks. In my house beer is the drink of choice. Obviously. Sometimes someone in my family has the audacity to ask me “Don’t you drink anything other than beer?”

The simple answer is “Yes!”, the complicated answer is “Yes, beer based cocktails!”. Truth be told, sometimes, you just want to mix it up a bit between the lagers and the ales, or maybe you just want to impress your close ones with some fancy drinks. Either way, here’s three of my favourite beer cocktails best enjoyed during the holidays.

Trust me, you’ll look super cool and fancy! If you can’t find the beer from the recipe, feel free to substitute your own.

Rock Session: Quidi Vidi Brewing Co.
Here’s a little beauty from the Rock (that’s Newfoundland for the layman) in between the presents and Christmas dinner, you probably want an easy drink to keep you going. Whether you’re settling in for a mid-day snooze or ramping up before the droves of family pour into your doors, this is the drink to set the mood.

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz Quidi Vidi Day Boil Session IPA (or similar)

  • 1.5 oz Campari

  • 0.5 oz Mandarin juice (about one orange worth)

  • 1 Mandarin twist for garnish

  • Lots of big chunks of ice or icicles

How to:
Put all the ingredients in your favourite glass and give it a good ol’ finger mix. Garnish with a slip of that mandarin orange you got in the bottom of your stocking.

Sibling Rivalry: Blindman Brewing
Let’s face it, at some point over the holidays, someone’s going to say the wrong thing, give the wrong present, or eat the last turkey leg. This will inevitably start round 46 of an old fight that everyone is still sour about from last year. Instead of taking part, why not pour yourself the aptly named Sibling Rivalry, sit back, and watch the show.

Shaker:

  • 2 oz Whiskey

  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice

  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup

  • 1 Egg White

Topper:
Blindman Brewing Blackberry and Plum Florida Weisse

How to:
Throw all the shaker ingredients in a shaker with Ice. Shake like you’re waiting for a kiss from Auntie Berta. Pour into your favourite glass and top with the Weisse.

Yukon Sunrise: Yukon Brewing
This time of year, if we’re going to talk about anything dark, we might as well leave it to the experts of darkness up north – Yukon Brewing. This is a simple drink that’s great for toasting at any meal, yes that means breakfast too. In fact, this little cocktail is a perfect substitute for that overplayed mimosa.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Yukon Brewing Midnight Sun Espresso Stout

  • 2 oz Champagne/Prosecco

How to:
Fill a skinny glass halfway with Stout. Hold a small spoon over the flute and slowly pour the Champagne over the spoon into the flute - this keeps the Champagne from mixing with the Stout, creating a beaut of a layered effect.
